Abstract

Immunological disorders of the nervous system are strongly influenced by the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and the blood-nerve barrier (BNB). Recently, the BNB was demonstrated, by means of an experimental tracer study, to differ from the BBB in having greater permeability to IgG (1). Since the BNB is known to be impaired in inflammatory neuropathies, it was the aim of this study to determine to what extent the permeability of the BNB is altered for IgG and other serum proteins during Wallerian degeneration and subsequent regeneration.
