Abstract

First introduced for an aneurysm of the basilar trunk bifurcation by Mount and Taveras [35], occlusion of the vertebrobasilar axis proximal to the lesion has been frequently used by Drake in giant aneurysms of the vertebrobasilar system (39 out of 73 cases), either on the vertebral artery or on the basilar trunk itself. As in occlusion of the carotid axis, the aim is to produce a complete or, failing that, a partial thrombosis of the sac, or at least a decrease of intrasaccular pressure.
