Abstract
Cervical occlusion of the carotid arteries was widely used as a definitive treatment for intracranial aneurysms regardless of their size, from 1885 untill microsurgery was introduced in the 1970s. Initially used on an empirical basis, the method achieved wide recognition after hemodynamic studies established that it was possible to reduce pressure in the artery distal to the occlusion. In order to evaluate its clinical results, we have conducted a literature review including the main series published during the period when carotid occlusion was regarded by many as the least dangerous treatment for intracranial aneurysms.
