Zusammenfassung
VIP — vasoaktives intestinales Polypeptid, ein aus 28 Aminosäuren zusammengesetztes Polypeptid, welches erstmals von Said Mutt (1970) aus dem menschlichen Darm isoliert wurde, erfüllt alle Charakteristika eines Neurotransmitters oder Neuromodulators. Weitergehende Arbeiten haben gezeigt, daß sich dieses vermeintliche Neuropeptid nicht nur im Darm, sondern vermehrt auch im Urogenitaltrakt findet [1, 2, 4, 5, 9]. Tierexperimentelle Studien hatten gezeigt, daß VIP primär eine Vasodilatation und Relaxation glattmuskulärer Strukturen bewirkt. Derartige Effekte haben zu der Spekulation geführt, daß dieses Neuropeptid Transmitterfunktionen in bestimmten Körperorganen erfüllt [3, 6, 7, 10].
