Kurzlebige Zyklotron-produzierte Radionuklide gewinnen in der modernen nuklearmedizinischen Funktionsdiagnostik zunehmend an Bedeutung. Das ideale Radionuklid für in-vivo Anwendungen sollte möglichst folgende Voraussetzungen erfüllen:

kein α- oder β −-Strahler sein,
-
γ-Quanten mit Energien im Bereich von 100–300 keV oder Positronen emittieren
-
eine Halbwertszeit von einigen Minuten bis zu einigen Stunden besitzen
-
möglichst stabile kovalente Bindungen mit Kohlenstoffatomen bilden.
