Abstract
The minimum viewing distance to be maintained when looking at a TV picture without detecting any loss of sharpness is determined by the spatial resolution or definition, which thus is a measure of the field of view to be obtained. Consequently, High Definition Television (HDTV) aims at increasing considerably the field of view of the displayed images as compared to standard TV systems (Fig. 1). This is one of the prerequisites for achieving what has been called telepresence, a word depicting the sensation of reality and fidelity to be conveyed, with the observer no longer consciously being aware of the restrictions and delimitations of the electronic transmission and the display medium.
