Abstract

The higher level of quality of a high definition television system (HDTV) is leading to extreme requirements for production quality particularly in studio techniques. Those demands only can be fulfilled, if a changeover to processing the colour component signals is managed or a completely digital studio technique is used — as it is aimed at also for today’s 625 line standard. The decision for a digital production standard is substantially determined by the processing quality which can be obtained with a digital effects mixer. Moreover, the video mixer is the most important equipment in the TV studio, since all source signals can be selected and combined in it in the way which is desired by the production manager, therefore, the video mixer is of great significance especially in the future HDTV studio. Supported by the German Ministry of Research and Development (BMFT), a digital video mixing system has been built up at the Institut für Nachrichtentechnik of the Technical University of Braunschweig within the past three years. It is being demonstrated within the framework of the Technical Presentation of this conference and it proves the possibility to realize such an HDTV mixer with today’s technological means.
