Abstract
The hepatic scavenger receptor is a high affinity receptor on the surface of the sinusoidal endothelial cells and Kupffer cells (Nagelkerke et al., 1983; Pitas et al., 1985). it was suggested that the hepatic scavenger receptor could remove modified forms of LDL from the circulating blood and protect the arterial wall from an increased influx of atherogenic LDL particles. It was found that acetylated LDL (Goldstein et al., 1979), malondialdehyde-modified LDL (Fogelman et al., 1980), LDL oxidized by endothelial cells (Henrickson et al., 1981) and apoprotein B-rich particles isolated from the atherosclerotic aorta (Goldstein et al., 1981) are recognized by the scavenger receptor. In addition, the scavenger receptor binds maleylated albumin and some polyanionic compounds, including poly(inosinic acid) and poly (vinyl sulfate) (Brown et al, 1980).
