Externally Induced Hyperthermia

Innovations in Radiation Oncology

Part of the book series: Medical Radiology ((Med Radiol Radiat Oncol))

Abstract

Hyperthermia continues to be the subject of numerous clinical trials and intensive multidisciplinary investigations in biology, physics and engineering laboratories. Progress has been steady but painstaking since investigators are continually challenged by the complex problems of determining how to combine hyperthermia with the already effective modalities of X-radiation and chemotherapy and whether treatment has been improved by the addition of heat. Perhaps even more challenging is the task of safely and effectively heating anatomic regions of clinical importance. The purpose of this chapter is to summarize the present art and science of externally or non-invasively induced hyperthermia; reasonable restrictions on its length do not permit an exhaustive discussion of the relevant subject material. It is assumed that the reader is familiar with some of the basic principles of the developing field of hyperthermia (see Stewart and Gibbs 1984 for review).
