Abstract

Acute respiratory failure (ARF) is a common complication of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Recent advances have improved survival since mortality rate in decompensated COPD has decreased below 20%. The major improvement concerns the development of a conservative approach employing nonventilatory techniques.
