Abstract
Recent x-ray and electron diffraction, electron microscope, and neutron studies of the pretransformation and transformation structure of these alloys show that they cannot be attributed to mode softening, charge density waves, or Fermi surface effects, and that tweed structure can have several origins. Rather, it is proposed that these systems exhibit the features expected of highly anisotropic, anharmonically bistable, structural changes involving planes normal to [110] and sliding transversely between alternative metastable positions. Thereby a continuous transition of the nucleation type proposed by deGennes can take place.
