Abstract

A brief summary of variational methods for many-electron systems is given with main emphasis on approaches a la Gutzwiller. A simple ansatz is proposed for the large U limit of the Hubbard model and shown to agree extremely well with the exact solution in one dimension. Variational schemes can be useful in different contexts like the derivation of Landau parameters for heavy-fermion systems, the influence of U on lattice dimerization in conjugated polymers or even the spectra of excited states in semiconductors.
