Abstract
The Total and Updated Lagrangian Descriptions ( TLD and ULD ) are two formulations often used for the finite element non linear analysis of structures. The TLD formulation requires the exact large displacement field for large rotation analysis. But, such expressions are often difficult to obtain and to use. In [1, 2]anexact displacement field is obtained for 2D beam and arch structures, and four different strain expressions with the TLD are used to show the importance of displacement and strain expressions. In [3 ] a 3D beam displacement field is derived for the finite displacements and moderate rotations using Euler angles. In [4] an another 3D finite displacement field is presented, but it depends on the order of the rotations and is not uniquc. To the authers’ knowledge the exact large displacement field of 3D beam has not been derived and used.
