Abstract

In the last 10 years, high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) has largely replaced the older forms of liquid chromatography, gravity column and thin layer chromatography as the method of choice for separating plant hormones. Apologists for HPLC point out the shorter separation times, higher resolution, and greater convenience of HPLC compared to alternative methods. While the advantages of HPLC are veritable, they are not always realized. Separating abscisic acid (ABA) from a plant extract by HPLC is relatively easy, but achieving separations of high quality may prove difficult.
