Abstract
The importance of counting in the understanding of images has been underestimated. Problem — distinguishing a man from a dog. A quick solution — count the legs. If the answer is “two”, it’s a man. Other examples easily come to mind: a hand has five fingers, a pair of scissors has two holes, a teacup has one handle, a bowl none, and the small letter “i” consists of two connected areas.
