Abstract

The role of parenteral nutrition (PN) in the operative management of cancer patients has been well recognized for the past 10–15 years; a great number of surgeons believe it to be the most effective method of improving the nutritional status of cancer patients perioperatively. We can not absolutely agree with them, since PN is also a potentially hazardous and expensive therapy. One must therefore evaluate its risks and its benefits before recommending its use in daily practise. In this context we have to answer the following questions.
