The reader, if he or she has had even the slightest exposure to science or engineering, will certainly recall many examples of the relation of atomic arrangements to properties. Ball models of the atoms in crystals have become part of almost every laboratory in the last sixty years. Most of our knowledge concerning atomic arrangements comes from diffraction — simply because any diffraction grating expresses itself in its diffraction pattern; this pattern can tell us much about the nature of the grating.
