Abstract

Though it cannot be our object to write a medical or psychiatric history of Iran or a comprehensive account of hygiene and medical epidemiology at the time our work began, a few salient facts must be stated as points of reference from which these surveys and their results better can be understood. Fortunately, medical history up to the inception of “modern” medicine in Iran has been well covered by Elgood [66]. Some more recent events and appraisals are quoted in the following, mainly from the first joint survey report of Petrossian, Shayan, Jessup and Bash from Fars Ostan (Province) in 1964/13431 [166].
