Torticollis Versus Plagiocephaly

Abstract

Because of its popular usage to describe the craniofacial distortion that is associated with premature unilateral coronal synostosis (UCS), the word “plagiocephaly” can be dangerously misleading. The term (from the Greek plagios, oblique, and kephale, head), is descriptive in a general sense and does not denote, as commonly misconstrued, a specific etiologic entity. Skeletal anomalies (eg., UCS and cervical vertebral fusion) and muscular malformations can both cause the deformation. Accurate and cautious use of the term is thus advised.
