Abstract
Carcinoma of the lung remains the most common cancer in men in the United States. It has been the most common cause of cancer death in men and its incidence is still rising. Unfortunately, since 1985 it has now become also the most common cause of cancer death in women. The American Cancer Society projected for 1986 that 149000 new cases of lung cancer would be detected in the United States alone, and of these 130100 would die of their disease. It has also predicted that 41100 cases of cancer death due to lung cancer would occur for women, 1200 more than the breast cancer death anticipated in women in 1986 [1].
