Abstract
Until quite recently structural mechanics concerned itself with linear problems, firstly, due to a lack of understanding of the physical principles involved and secondly because descriptions of non-linear phenomena lead to non-linear equations, for which the classical methods of mathematical analysis are inapplicable.
