Abstract
The subsurface Niagaran pinnacle reef trend of northern Michigan, USA, contains over 500 individual carbonate buildups in a linear belt 15 km wide and 250 km long. This system formed during a period of continuous subsidence in the Michigan Basin (Fischer 1975) and as a result the entire spectrum of reef diagenesis, from near-surface to deep subsurface, can be studied within a framework of known physical and temporal constraints. Correlation of specific diagenetic phases to the burial history of the host carbonates can therefore be used to identify important diagenetic controls such as absolute timing and fluid composition.
