Monte Carlo Studies of Relaxation Phenomena: Kinetics of Phase Changes and Critical Slowing Down

Abstract

Monte Carlo calculations of the dynamic properties of various stochastic models are reviewed, concentrating upon applications of kinetic Ising models to biopolymers, anisotropic magnets, and binary metallic alloys. Dynamic phenomena at critical as well as tricritical points are treated, and simulations are described which elucidate the kinetic mechanisms of first-order phase transitions (like nucleation, spinodal decomposition, etc.). Consequences of these simulations both for experiment and for analytic theories are outlined.
