Abstract

A Consensus Development Panel on liver transplantation convened at the NIH in 1983 concluded that transplantation is an acceptable therapeutic modality for the treatment of end stage liver disease [1]. Further, a 1984 survey by Starzl et al. revealed that since the beginning of human liver transplantation in 1963, 269 (47.3%) of 569 North American liver transplant recipients were still alive [2]. One female recipient had given birth twice and another women once. The overall 1 year survival had improved from 32.9% in 1979 to approximately 69.7% in 1984.
