Abstract
The antibiotic treatment of serious and potentially life-threatening infections must be reviewed at regular intervals in all hospitals and in departments within hospitals for the following reasons:
-
1.
The micro-organisms prevalent in any clinical environment change constantly as a result of several factors including patient populations, medical and nursing procedures, and selective pressures imposed by antibiotics.
-
2.
The antibiotic sensitivity patterns of these organisms also change.
-
3.
Previously unknown infections are being increasingly recognised.
-
4.
New antibiotics are continually being introduced.
