Abstract

Multiorgan failure (MOF) is defined as the sequential occurrence of vital function systems failure within a short period of time [1]. Vital systems involved are lungs, kidneys, circulation, gastrointestinal tract, liver, metabolism, hemostatic system. MOF is observed after polytrauma and high risk surgical procedures as well as in severe medical disease like pneumonia, pancreatitis, infections of the central nervous system, and intoxications. The incidence of MOF in high risk patients is 5–10% [3].
