Abstract
The fuzzy outlines of pachytene and diplotene chromosomes in the spermatocytes of many animals have for long invited comparison with the lampbrush chromosomes of oocytes. Three early papers (Hsu 1948, Srivastava 1951, 1954) made the claim, based on morphological similarity, that the lateral extensions from the chromosomes to be seen in fixed and stained preparations of spermatocytes of grasshoppers during meiotic prophase correspond to the lateral “fibres” projecting from lampbrush chromosomes. At first I thought so too (Callan 1957).
