Synopsis
The paper is devoted to such methods of reliability analysis which reduce the influence of data uncertainties on safety decisions. In an introductory section, use of importance measures to evaluate structural safety characteristics is briefly outlined. The following sections present applications to problems in ship design and operation: Firstly, structural reliability characteristics of a ship’s steering gear are evaluated. Secondly, structural reliability characteristics of a ship’s operation are evaluated under the condition of navigation in danger of grounding. In both examples, which belong to the class of so-called operating structures, measures of importance are considered the adequate basis for decision making. Thirdly, mechanical reliability characteristics of a ship’s transverse frame structure are evaluated under the condition of grounding. In this last example, which belongs to the class of so-called load carrying structures, dominance of failure modes is considered the adequate basis for decision making.
