Abstract
Direct disposal of spent nuclear fuel, as an alternative to the reprocessing option, is being investigated in the Federal Republic of Germany since 1979. This work was actually initiated by a decision of both the Federal and the State Governments concerning the policy of the back end of the nuclear fuel cycle. In 1980, a four year R&D programme has been established persueing two major goals:
-
Development of a technical concept for direct disposal enabling a judgement of both its realizability as well as its safety features
-
Comparison of both options, thereby contributing to the concluding evaluation of direct disposal called for in the governmental decision.
