Summary

The generation of aeolian tones by a rough cylinder was investigated in a large wind tunnel at Reynolds numbers between 104 and 4 × 104. At low Reynolds numbers, the measured sound pressure level agrees well with predictions for smooth cylinders, but it increases less rapidly with flow velocity at higher Reynolds numbers. This can be exolained by the effects of the surface roughness of the cylinder. The sound radiation could be substantially reduced by means of helical trip wires.
