Secondary Ion Formation Processes in Amino Acid — Metal Adsorption Systems

Ion Formation from Organic Solids (IFOS III)

Part of the book series: Springer Proceedings in Physics ((SPPHY,volume 9))

Abstract

Due to its high sensitivity, especially by using a time-of-flight instrument, secondary ion mass spectrometry has been applied in several fields of biological and medicinal research /1/. However, only little understanding concerning the ion formation process has been obtained so far, mainly caused by the very complex surface composition which results from the conventional sample preparation out of a solution. The large number of possible interactions in such samples makes it difficult to get reliable information about the influence of the substrate on molecular secondary ion emission. Thus, well-defined adsorption systems are required.
