Abstract
All solid surfaces, even very carefully prepared ones, possess some degree of roughness. It becomes a matter of interest, then, to examine the consequences of that roughness for physical phenomena associated with surfaces. The propagation of surface waves across a rough surface has a particular interest in this regard, because the fields associated with such waves can be localized to the surface within a distance comparable with the lengths characterizing the surface roughness. The interaction between a surface wave and surface roughness can be very strong as a result.
