Abstract

If a lattice in mechanical equilibrium is disturbed, every particle in the lattice undergoes certain vibrations about its equilibrium position. The frequencies, amplitudes and directions of movement of all particles can be found using the Born-von Karman formalism, provided that the interacting forces operating in the system are known.
