Abstract

Screening for early stages is considered to be the most favorite method to improve the prognosis of cancer. As for colorectal carcinoma it is the search for invisible amounts of blood in the stool which seems to appear as an early symptom in the development of a malignant colon tumor. There are a lot of enthusiastic reports about this screening method, called “fecal occult blood testing”. Especially the widespread recommendation of the Haemoccult-test and the conviction that its effectiveness has been proved are aspects of general agreement. The subject of this paper is to compare the established original data about Haemoccult screening with this general appreciation, as it is found in the secondary literature.
