Summary
Infectious endocarditis imposes a burden on the clinician to immediately have valid decisions on a disease process that is just under suspicion but diagnostically not wellknown. Yet patients have to undergo sophisticated antibiotic treatment or even operation. Low incidence and high variability of the disease course increase uncertainty of diagnostic and therapeutic decisions.
In this paper an expert system for the diagnostic and therapeutic support of infectious endocarditis will be presented. The design principles will be shown, including the intended physicians’ support, the structure of the knowledge base, the data base and the human interface. It will be outlined that, besides the individual support of the patient’s diagnosis and therapy, the acquired data as a whole are of similar importance. These data can be used for a validation of the knowledge base and for statistical data analysis as well. Relationships to other systems will be discussed.
