Abstract

A general review about the research and production progress of laser crystals in China. In the past quater centry, a considerable foundation and strength has been built. Through further effort China’s laser crystal will soon reach the world advenced level.

In the year 1960, China began to research laser crystals. The home made laser crystals have ever played an improtant part in the birth of China’s first ruby lasers (September 1961) and their later development. Today in the whole country, there are about 30 institutes, universities and factories with about 1,000 scientists, engineers and workers developing about 30 kinds of laser crystals. Ruby and YAG have already been put into production and widely used. Some new and promising crystals are under intensive investigation, and their applications will be found soon.

In this paper, we give a general review about the past and future of the research and production progress of laser crystals in China.
