Abstract

The research literature on recovery from alcoholism has not addressed empirical documentation of the array of protracted alcohol withdrawal symptoms (PAWS) experienced by subjects who are in early alcohol-free recovery. Rather, the research has focused primarily on a particular circumscribed area of biologic (e. g., REM sleep alterations) or psychosocial (e.g., memory impairment) functioning in recovery. Other references to PAWS symptomatology in early recovery have been limited to descriptive reports by clinicians in rehabilitative settings.
