The Development of Highly Automated Flexible Manufacturing Systems in the GDR

  • P. Ulrich
Conference paper

Flexible manufacturing systems (FMS) consist of workstations which are interconnected by the material and information flow. The automated transport is performed according to the following principles: workpiece transport without pallets, workpiece transport by use of machine pallets, and workpiece transport by using transport pallets. The production control of flexible manufacturing systems is of modular structure. The principles used are represented. Examples of FMS for machining prismatic and rotational workpieces are demonstrated.
