Abstract

Recently, flexible manufacturing systems (FMs) have been recognized as one of the most important pieces of technology in computerized manufacturing.

This paper is concerned with tandem blocking queueing systems for a class of FMs. The tandem queueing system consists of aseries of work stations with general service-time distributions. Each station may have many servers(machines) and the buffer storage between any two adjacent stations is limited.

We offer guidlines for design of the FMs and methods for evaluating the system performance of a given FM, based on a series of basic results for the tandem queueing system recently obtained by the author and others. The measure of the system effectiveness is the production rate if an infinite number of jobs always waits in front of the first station, while it is the delay time of ajob in the system if jobs arrive at the system according to an arbitrary stochastic process.
