Abstract

In a clean metal, experiment and theory agree that inelastic electron-phonon collisions occur at a rate (kT)33ωD 2. In a dirty metal the theory predicts a reduction of the collision-rate by a factor of kFℓ(kT/ħωD), provided that this factor is small; but in other cases there may also be an increase of this rate due to a participation of transverse phonons. The results obtained recently in weak localization experiments do not agree satisfactorily with this theory.

  9. First of all, only collisions with energy-transfer ω ≥ 1/τφ contribute. This modification is irrelevant for phonons. Secondly, an energy average <ℓnτ(E,T)> in the range |E| ∿ kT should be computed. Only changes of order 10-1 are expected.
