Abstract

At birth, the major transition for the newborn infant is switching from a passive to an active role in gas exchange. Success in this process is the major determinant of the well-being and survival of newly-born infants. When delivery occurs at term the transition is normally accomplished with ease. With premature delivery, however, the ability of the lung to exchange gas is often inadequate.
