Abstract

The non-linear susceptibility χ(3) of condensed samples is, in part, determined by interaction-induced (I–I) effects; that is, by changes in molecular polarizabilities which result from intermolecular interactions. Here the way in which these effects may influence time-domain experiments with sub-picosecond pulses on χ(3) (such as Kerr transient studies or 4-wave mixing) will be considered. Quite analogous I–I effects have been extensively studied by conventional frequency domain spectroscopy, particularly light scattering, and the intention of this article is to review the information so gained in the context of the time domain experiments, where the I–I effects have only recently been resolved.
