Active Mode-Locking Using Fast Electro-Optic Deflector

Abstract

Recently, an ultrafast electro-optic deflector (EOD) has developed into a picosecond pulse generator [1], an optical streak camera [2], a picosecond optical Fourier transformer [3], and so on. Here, we propose to use the EOD as an active mode-locking modulator. Advantage of the EOD is in its desirable loss modulation property. Stable 6ps pulses were experimentally generated from a purely active mode-locked Nd:glass laser using the EOD.
