Abstract

In this paper we will report experimental evidence on the existence of solítons in ferromagnetic quantum (S=1/2) XY chains, as observed in the recently discovered system (C6H11NH3)CuBr3. We have measured the excess specific heat △C, the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation (NSLR) time T1 in the field range 0 < B < 7 k0e and the temperature range 1.5 K < T < 10 K, although some data are also obtained outside this region. These data will show that both the dynamic behavior of the electronspin system, as monitored by T1, and an equilibrium property like C can be understood by adopting solitons as dominant excitations in an appropriate temperature and field regime. Parts of these results have been published recently [1].
