Adjuvant Programs for Postmenopausal Women with Node-Positive Breast Cancer:Preliminary Analysis of 5-Year Results

Part of the book series: Recent Results in Cancer Research ((RECENTCANCER,volume 96))

Abstract

The results of the first CMF program (cyclophosphamide, methotrexate, and fluorouracil given for 12 monthly cycles) indicated only a slight benefit for the subgroup of postmenopausal patients with node-positive (N+) breast cancer [2, 9]. Although this finding was not consistently reported in all case series [3], several hypotheses were formulated to interpret the impact of adjuvant results on patients who are postmenopause [e.g., suboptimal drug-dose levels and proportion of estrogen receptor (ER) positive tumors].
