Part of the book series: Lecture Notes in Engineering ((LNENG,volume 8))

Abstract

In this chapter, the equations governing the multiphase flow and transport of contaminants in a porous medium are derived. A general mass balance expression is developed in Section 2.1, Sections 2.2–2.7 deal with the application of this balance law to each of the porous medium components in turn. Based on the physical characteristics of these components, various constitutive relations and approximations are introduced. Incorporation of these constitutive relations into the balance laws make the resulting system of mass balance equations more amenable to solution. An equation summary is given in Section 2.8.
