Experimental Approaches to Outcome Prediction in Acute Myeloblastic Leukemia

  • Chapter
Predictive Drug Testing on Human Tumor Cells

Part of the book series: Recent Results in Cancer Research ((RECENTCANCER,volume 94))

Abstract

The practice of oncology depends upon accurate staging, the process that relates the initial clinical and laboratory assessment of a patient to the subsequent history of the disease. Staging not only provides the basis for prognosis but also allows patient populations to be stratified in clinical trials. Usually, staging has statistical validity; that is, predictions of outcome are applicable to populations of patients but not to individuals. A goal of research is to develop methods sufficiently sensitive to permit such predictions.
