Abstract

Ever since Nyswander, Dole and other researchers [20] published their early works on the treatment of heroin addicts with methadone, a synthetic opiate derivate, this modality has evolved into one of the most widely used treatment alternatives [22, 35] for heroin addicts in the United States. At present, it is administered to nearly one-third (32%) of all U. S. heroin addicts under treatment [35].
