The characterization of small metal particles is of direct importance for catalytic activity studies, since many of the most interesting catalysts are composed of metal particles (Rh, Pt, Re, etc.) supported on a carrier (γ-Al2O3, C, etc.). A systematic study of the crystal planes that a particle exposes to a gas during a reaction has direct impact on our knowledge of the physics and chemistry of surfaces.
