Magnetic Phase Transitions

Abstract

The starting point for any description of magnetic excitations in crystals is the electronic ground state of the component ions. Magnetic ions have an incomplete shell of inner electrons whose number is determined by the valency or charge state of the ion. The ground state when the valency is known can usually be determined by Hund’s rule. The atomic spins and trbital moments line up to give a total spin and arbital angular momentum \({\rm{\vec S}}\) and \({\rm{\vec L}}\), while at the same time satisfying the Pauli principle that no two electrons can occupy the same state.
